The Wits Interventional Radiology Society connects registrars, consultants and students across the University of the Witwatersrand academic circuit who are advancing image-guided medicine in South Africa.

What is interventional radiology?
Interventional radiology treats complex disease through pinhole incisions and image guidance. The society's work spans two connected areas of image-guided practice.
Body intervention
Body intervention spans vascular and non-vascular image-guided care, including embolisation, oncologic intervention, hepatobiliary and organ-based procedures, and the management of complex vascular disease.
Neurointervention
WIRS highlights neurointervention exposure across the Wits academic teaching-hospital circuit — where registrars train in South Africa's public-sector setting — including the image-guided treatment of stroke, aneurysms and other neurovascular disease.
How the society holds itself.
The platform and programme run under fixed governance principles:
- No patient-identifiable information or clinical imagery is ever hosted on this platform.
- Educational content is reviewed before publication and is never clinical guidance or an institutional protocol.
- Research listings organise and display work — authority over projects rests with the research committee and supervising consultants.
- Events, faculty and programme details are published only once they are confirmed and approved.
